  • Home Recording Setup Question Canon T3i to LR Baggs to Shure SM58

I am trying to see if this will work. i have a Canon T3i camera to record video. i want to use microphone input. i cannot plug my shure sm58 microphone directly in as it will not power it so i am trying to use the LR Baggs to power and also provide audio options going into the camera.

    my current setup
sm58: xlr to 1/4" jack cable. this is plugged into the input on LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI. i then have 1/4 output going into the T3i via 1/4 to 3.5mm adapter.

i can't seem to get the sound working though. any ideas on what i am doing wrong? i turned the audio on t3i to manual and put down the level to 1 click before zero so i wouldn't get any hiss of camera. i barely hear any audio like it is using the 1 click above zero audio from the camera instead of microphone...

To my knowledge the Shure SM58 does not use phantom power. The SM58 could be plugged directly into the mic input on your camera via 1/4" female to 3.5mm male adapter. The signal should show up in your camera's display screen when you move the camera's mic volume up to a sufficient level. The Para DI could be used if you wanted to eq your signal before it hits the camera.

Does your XLR convert down to a balanced 1/4" or unbalanced?

If it's a balanced 1/4" going into the input of the Para DI, then the DI won't even turn on.

If the DI is turning on, then you may just need to turn up your mic input level on the camera. If it's designed to receive a hot signal, one click above off may not be loud enough.
