  • Pickup options for Weissenborn

I've been planning on putting a M1A in my weissenborn. I have two concerns, one is that the strings will be quite high above the pickup. Much higher than a normal guitar just due to the necessarily high action of the slide guitar. Is this going to affect the sound negatively, or is that extra 1/4 inch not enough to make a difference? Also, I'm I going to lose the complexity of sound that a hollowneck gives by going with a magnetic pickup. Should I be looking at the Anthem instead if I'm primarily looking to preserve the unique hollowneck sound as accurately as possible?

    Hi Bfraser,

Great questions. The action is of some concern in that there may be a diminished string sensitivity relative to body response. While that tends to support a more natural sound, it can lose a little presence in a mix if you're playing in an group. Also, as you suspect, the magnetic pickup doesn't convey the same woodiness in its signal. There's a smoother characteristic to magnetic pickup signals as opposed to piezo.

The Anthem is a good thing to investigate. I am not aware of anybody installing one on a weissenborn instrument yet but, provided installation conditions are good, I imagine it would produce an excellent sound. There are certain factors that must considered, though, related to the setup of the instrument.

If you're able, please call me at 805-929-3545, ext. 111, to discuss those factors in detail.
