There are a few different things that can cause strings to break at the saddle. The most common issues are when the saddle has a sharp edge, and when the string has too much room to roll. When the string rolls back and forth too much, it can wear out much more quickly at the point of saddle contact. Filing can be effective, but it can be very easy to do damage to the pickup sensor, if not done precisely.
