Lyric Acoustic Mic for a resonator steel guitar...?

Hi all,

Has anyone any experience with the Lyric Mic System with a steel resonator guitar? I have a Recording King Tri-Cone which I thought might benefit...

Hi Rick,
We are actually working on something to that end, right now. However, without any modification, I can say that the Lyric mic sounds horrible when attached directly to the Reso Cone. The preamp, battery and mic placement are all problems by themselves inside a resonator.

We are working on some ideas, so stay tuned. I wouldn't recommend using the current Lyric on a resonator though.

Sorry I asked this question in my first post a few minutes ago - I am working my way through the forum.

I reckon the Lyric mic would need to be located above the cone at the neck position smack dab in the middle of the 'f' holes on a standard reso duolian style steel guitar - the problem is the volume control - you'd need to make a clip in one along the lines of Korg's new rim tuner to fit in the 'f' hole I think...... the input could fit in a lot of spots on the body and there's loadsa room for the battery pack. The main issue is the length of the wiring.......isn't it?

Or an alternative suggestion would be to have preamp module be an external plug in - male to male connection - or use a proprietary plug one end to safe guard your sales!

I'm in the queue to buy one!

Due to the way the mic works, placing it on the top between the f-holes actually doesn't work very well. We've actually had to do some pretty extensive modifications in order to get the mic to work.

I can't say much about how we have been able to make it work, but there are definitely a lot of things to consider. The battery, volume control, preamp, etc. are all components that would either need to be fitted into the instrument, or left in an external box.

I'm looking to upgrade a wooden spider bridge dobro that has a passive Fishman (oops... F word) cone transducer now. I'm not opposed to adding a battery box and either a side mount preamp, or volume, bass & treble up near the neck on the bass side of the guitar. Since this thread is a little old now, are there any updates that can be discussed?

Hey Tonedog,
We haven't made any updates to the Lyric since this thread was started. So it would still be a very complicated process to make the Lyric work in a Dobro.

Due to all of the small variations from instrument to instrument, you would be pretty much on your own if you decided to attempt it. You would be the pioneer.

I know this is an old thread. but as of recent I have installed the lyric to my reso guitar (dobro) and getting great results. Better than any other pick up system I've tried. It's a round neck that I use for both slide, blues and country and have to say I couldn't be happier. I will post sound samples on my sound cloud soon for people to hear!

Near the bottom on the cone near the fold. I had to use two layers of double sided tape to compensate for the fact that the pickup isn't being mounted onto a flat surface. I was curious if the tape would hold as only about half of it on each side is touching the cone to stay attached. So far so good. I put the volume control in an F hole and the battery has to get changed by taking the cone out. I have lyric jack and my Neck Tele pickup jack both mounted in position of the body that a gibson les paul would be mounted. All fits and works fine. I use both pickups for different purpose and combined as well. Couldn't be happier with both pickups. I'm one of those people changing pickups every month looking for ideal sounds. This idea came to me last week and has worked out very well. Hope this helps Tonedog!
