  • Lyric in Ovation

Is there a tested method for mounting the Lyric pick-up in an Ovation? I ask as the Ovation does not have the solid sound board underneath the top that other acoustics have.

    Hey Jeff,
The Lyric can mount directly to the top. If there is room directly underneath the bridge, then that would be the preferred placement option. If not, then mount it as close to the bridge as possible. That way it will still be able to get the best sound from the instrument.

I have an Ovation Elite 1868, it has rear access and it should be an easy install, it has no bridgeplate as pointed and solved above, but it has fan bracing covering the bridge area. I'm very interested in the Lyric system, it seems compatible with this guitar, the volume control could be placed where those multiple holes near the neck joint are. But the mic should be rotated for 90°, not perpendicular to the strings, because of the bracing. Can it work that way too?

Thanks a lot and hello to everyone as this is my first post.

      Alfonso.

        Hey Alfonso,
The mic capsule is located in the center of the mic housing. So it can easily be turned or re-oriented at any angle without effecting the tone of the mic itself.

Ovations are tricky to add additional pickups as their design is very unique and untraditional. Personally, I'm a fan, but I agree that I think their pickup systems could use a second source.

A good tech should be able to find a the sweet spot for a Lyric under the soundboard, but I would recommend it more so in a Balladeer/Legend style guitar than the multi-soundhole Elite/Adamas models. You'll have trouble accessing the the volume through those soundholes and I wonder if the design of the top will result in a boxier response from the Lyric. I'm just curious, as it would have the highly reflective bowl and the soundholes relocated to maximize top response. Just seems difficult to use.

Perhaps a better solution would be the iBeam and running it out the button strap to a separate preamp?
