  • Lyric: gradually gets noisier, squeals

Installed the Lyric pickup over a year ago, and until just recently it has been great. But now, after I've been playing through it for an hour or so, it gradually starts to get noisier and noisier (crackling and hissing) and then starts making a high-pitched squeal. Seems to me like some electronic component is failing. Is this something that can be fixed, does anyone know, or do I just have to replace it? Unhappy!

    Hey DrBill,
Have you changed the battery yet?

D'oh! Yeah that's probably it. Hadn't thought of this as a symptom of low battery but I've been doing a lot of recording with it recently and actually put a lot more hours on it in the last couple of weeks than I had since installing it. So that makes sense.

If I may jump in, apart from the squealing sound this is the same problem I am encountering. I've changed the battery multiple times, had the luthier who installed it inspect it, and it's still very present.

Does the noise change over time? Or is it always noisy?

The first time, after an hour or so of rehearsal, it just appeared. After I unplugged it, my pedals, used different cables, etc., it persisted. I had it checked by the installer and he heard immediately upon plugged it into his amp, so I tried it again. Same thing, after about an hour it popped up out of nowhere. (P.S. – I sent an email with audio of it to LR Baggs tech as well.)
