Lyric High-Mid and Bass Question

Hi. My name is Paul.
I had LR Baggs Lyric installed on my Gibson J-35 and Gibson J-45.
I been gigging with this setup for about months.
I used to play through element pickup system,
But I really liked the idea of Lyric and tru-mic,
So I decided to upgrade them to Lyrc.

I installed the pickup as how it was instructed on manual.
However,they both somehow sound very.. boxy. Mid heavy.
I do gig with LR baggs Venue DI, so I was able to cut some high-mid out (9 o'clock)
But I can't seem to bring the bass up because I'm getting feedback..
I like to have to warm bass..
I'm wondering if this issue is normal for this kind of pickup.

I had lyric installed in my guitars for about.. 2 months.
I tried everything with presence control down and up on Lyric, Venue DI Eq-ing..
Any help will be appreciated! Thanks!

Oh yeah, also,
When using with Venue DI,

1) What should be my volume setting on Lyric
2) How much gain should I use on Venue? (Yellow lights blink occasionally when I increase the gain around 3 o'clock)

Here you go. This diagram is based on our installation experience here at Baggs. So while it isn't a fix-all for every guitar and every Lyric, it has should be helpful in getting a good starting place for guitars that don't sound as good with the "stock" mic placement.

Should I wait for session DI or is there a better preamp to optimize.

The Session would definitely help to optimize the Lyric's sound, but it's definitely a different approach compared to a preamp/DI with EQ as it's primary shaping tool.

The Avalon U5 is a really great unit, but it's tonal shaping precision is very limited, even though the actual preamp input is excellent. If you want the best tools for dialing in the sound of any pickup, the Venue DI (EQ), or the Session DI (multiband compression) would probably be the better way to go.

Hi Caleb: I saw your post and diagram on placement of lyric from some years ago here. I just had a lyric installed in my Breedlove Ed Gerhard model. It has a bridge truss on the bridge limiting placement options. It has a very thin top and great bass and mids. Placing the Lyric off the bridge and up near the sound hole was way too bright. So the installer placed it just off the bright, directly on the underside of the top toward the bass of the guitar. It is super detailed but seems to not get all that prior more prominent beautiful bass of this guitar and maybe even mutes the deep bass? I have the screw dial to full bass and I'm wanting even more depth of bass that the guitar is capable of.

Is it possible that
1) Placement there is muting the bass a bit as a mute on an acoustic drum would?
2) Might further south near bottom of the guitar (on the top but near the preamp)
3) is placement on the side of the bridge truss and on the bridge, perpendicular to the bridge on the low E string side of the bridge best? or other?

Hey Mathew,
The Lyric is tricky like that. Like any mic, you can have a standard for what works most of the time, but certain situations will require changes to get the best results.

I've done a few installations of Anthems and Lyrics in Breedloves with their bridge truss. Even then, the bracing and bridge plate size varies a bit from one guitar model to the next. More often then not, I opt to place the mic on the backside of the bridge plate if I am unable to get a good sound/placement on the plate. I doubt that the Lyric is muting the bass, but positioning the mic a bit more toward the tail might give a more balanced sound.

The Lyric definitely doesn't have the same, heavy bass that you would usually get from an undersaddle pickup, but it should have a bass response close to what you hear acoustically.

Also, that trim control does not change the bass frequencies at all. It only affects the presence or high-frequencies. turning it all the way down will only darken the sound rather than give you more bass.

Yeah, the undersaddle in the Anthem always carries the bass frequencies. So you have better feedback rejection and a stronger bass response than the mic alone.
