B string pole piece

Hi

Has anyone ever come across a situation where better sound was obtained using the B polo piece?
in what kind of situation is this likely to happen?

The only time I've ever put the B-pole back into the pickup (when the guitar had bronze strings) was when there was a larger-than-normal gap between the pickup and the strings. I had to raise all of the poles up quite a bit and then needed to install the B-pole to balance the string to string output.
