Hey Marty,
The watch connects to the pedal through the phone, not directly. Once the connection is established, the app doesn't need to be opened and on for the watch to affect the pedal.

When using the Apple Watch, does the watch need to be bluetooth connected to the pedal or does it work through the phone?
